Description and nutritional values
An unusual flavor that combines the best characteristics of spinach and cabbage. Due to this distinctive taste, many people are uncertain about what it actually is. However, Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris) belongs to the Chenopodiaceae family, while spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a member of the Amaranthaceae family. Its vibrant stems and earthy taste make it a popular choice for both adventurous cooks and traditional recipes alike.
Its name comes from the Latin word for "thistle" (carduus), but the vegetable has many alternative names, including silver beet, sea beet, and leaf beet. It is also most commonly referred to as Swiss chard, even though the plant originates from the Mediterranean.
It can be used raw in salads or sandwiches, in wraps, in a fresh or sautéed form, or as an addition to soups.
